At the intersection of charity and fitness, KD merged all the effort spent on training and athletic competitions into a lifesaving cause, water.org, co-founded by his brother Matt Damon.
Clean water is a cost-efficient way to save lives, not only from water-borne disease but from wasted opportunity — children can spend the time going to school instead of fetching potable water. Women are empowered through the micro loans that require their participation, so their status in the community is enhanced. The solutions are self-sustaining and ongoing.
All that sweat, pain, and time it takes to compete takes on a whole new meaning, medal or no medal.
AT THE INTERSECTION OF CHARITY, BIKES, AND WOODWORKING...
Every Wednesday for many years KD and his friend Bill Hubner would bike before the sun was up into downtown Boston to The Women's Lunch Place, to make the women lunch. The shelter provides advocacy, a safe place, and a warm meal for the women they serve.
And the connection to Woodworking? KD built the chef a much-needed desk — a workspace where there just isn't much space to work.
